Fort Morgan State Historic Site: A Visitor's Guide to the Fort

The fort at the end of the peninsula is worth a morning. Here's what to see, how long to plan, what it costs, and a few tips from people who live nearby.

Brick archways and casemates inside Fort Morgan State Historic Site in Alabama

Drive Highway 180 west until you run out of road and you'll hit the thing the whole peninsula is named after: Fort Morgan. It's a big brick fort from the 1830s, sitting right where Mobile Bay meets the Gulf, and it's one of those places even the kids who "don't like history" end up running around for hours.

New to the area? Our complete Fort Morgan guide has the lay of the land.

A little history (the short version)

The fort was finished in 1834 to guard the entrance to Mobile Bay. Its big moment came in August 1864, during the Battle of Mobile Bay, when Union Admiral David Farragut ran his fleet past the fort's guns. That's the battle where he's famously said to have shouted, "Damn the torpedoes!" The fort held out for a couple of weeks under siege before surrendering.

It didn't stop there. The army used Fort Morgan again during the Spanish-American War and both World Wars, so as you walk around you'll see layers from different eras: the original star-shaped brick fort, concrete gun batteries from around 1900, and old military buildings.

What to see

Start at the museum near the entrance for context, then head into the fort itself. The main draws are the arched brick casemates (the vaulted rooms along the walls), the tunnels, and the ramparts on top, where you get a great view across the mouth of Mobile Bay toward Dauphin Island. Keep an eye on the water. Dolphins show up here a lot.

On some weekends there are living history programs and cannon demonstrations. Check the Alabama Historical Commission's Fort Morgan page before you go to see what's on.

Hours, tickets, and how long to plan

The fort and grounds are open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the museum has shorter hours. It closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. Admission is a few dollars per person, with family pricing, and you can buy tickets ahead of time online. Prices change, so check the Alabama Historical Commission's site for the current rates.

Plan on one to two hours. It's about 10 minutes west of The Beach Bayou.

Tips from people who live nearby

Go early in summer. The brick holds heat, and by midafternoon the parade ground feels like an oven. Bring water and wear real shoes, since the brick and stairs are uneven. The casemates are dim, so a phone flashlight helps.

Leashed dogs are generally welcome on the grounds, but the Gulf-side beach at the fort is off-limits to dogs. Our dog-friendly beach guide explains where they can go.

If you're into birds, the fort is a big deal. It's one of the best spots on the Gulf Coast to see spring and fall migration, and a banding station runs near the entrance each April and October. More in our birding guide.

Make a day of it

The Mobile Bay Ferry leaves from right next to the fort, so it's easy to pair the two: tour the fort in the morning, then ride across to Dauphin Island for lunch and Fort Gaines on the other side of the bay. Our ferry guide has the details, and our things to do guide has more ideas for the rest of the week.
