If you've spent the last hour scrolling rentals and muttering at "no pets" and "dogs not allowed on the beach," take a breath — you're not imagining it. Most of the Alabama coast really doesn't want your dog. Gulf Shores and Orange Beach both ban dogs from their public beaches, and the Bon Secour refuge won't have them either.
There's one happy exception out here, and it's Fort Morgan.

Fort Morgan is the dog-friendly Alabama beach
In plain terms, Fort Morgan is about the only place on Alabama's Gulf where your dog can legally set paw on the sand. Leashed dogs are welcome on the city beaches out here — which is honestly how half our guests find us. They got turned away everywhere else and kept searching.
A few rules keep it that way, and most of them are just good manners:
• Keep the leash on. It's the law, and it's the whole reason this beach is still dog-friendly.
• Pick up after your dog. Every single time. One lazy owner is how these privileges disappear for everyone.
• Know the off-limits spots. The gulf-front beach at the Fort Morgan historic site is a no-dog zone, as is the Bon Secour refuge. Stick to the city beaches and you're set.
• Give the wildlife room. Shorebirds nest out here, and sea turtles nest in season. Steer wide and keep your pup close.
What we'd pack (and one plant to dodge)
Bring more water than you think you need, a travel bowl, and a towel for sandy paws. Summer sun is no joke down here — dogs burn on their noses and bellies, and midday pavement will cook their pads. Walk early or late.
One local heads-up: sago palms. They're all over beach landscaping and they're seriously toxic to dogs if chewed. Keep your pup clear, and if they do get into one, call a vet right away. We're not being dramatic — it's a real one.
Eating out with the dog
You won't be stuck eating in the car. Tacky Jack's does dogs on the patio, and plenty of the laid-back spots around here have outdoor tables and a water bowl by the door. Leash on, manners on, and you're welcome most places.
Bringing the whole crew to The Beach Bayou
We're a dog house through and through — up to three are welcome, so nobody gets left home with a sitter. Fort Morgan gives your dog the beach; we put you a few minutes from it, with room for fourteen, a hot tub for the humans, and a golf cart your dog will absolutely try to ride shotgun on. Can I take my dog on the beach in Gulf Shores?
No — Gulf Shores and Orange Beach both keep dogs off their public beaches. Fort Morgan, right next door, is the exception that says yes.
Is it really dog-friendly, or is that a stretch?
It's real. Fort Morgan is known as the one Alabama Gulf beach that allows leashed dogs, as long as you clean up and stay on the city beaches rather than the historic-site beach.
